L’ALTRO LATO DELLA CITTA’

Villa Medici 2018

Progetto di Odysseas Yiannikouris e Alessandra Monarcha

Video/ Editing:  Simona Belotti

Reportage

Indonesia

Indonesia, known as Republic of Indonesia is a sovereign transcontinental country located mainly in Southeast Asia with some territories in Oceania.Situated between the Indian and Pacific Oceans,it’s the largest archipelagic country in the world, with more than 13 thousand islands and it’s the world’s fourth most populous country, the most populous Austronesian Nation,as well the most populous muslim majority country.Because Indonesia encompasses a sprawling archipelago, travelling around the country by local transports is still quite slow and sometimes complicated.Road transport is predominant, the rail transport system has four unconnected networks, sea transport is extremely important for economic integration and for domestic and foreign trade: this last one is well developed, with each of the major islands having at least one significant port city.A network of passenger ships makes longer connections to more remote islands, especially in the eastern part of the archipelago. This photographic project shows everyday indonesian life, crossing the country with local buses and ferries through some islands and long distances.Lots of people move between the islands looking for job, above all in Bali which is the most developed of all and they run small business and exchanges travelling everyday with this flow.

Through the Green Season

Reportage

Costarica is the country with the greatest biodiversity in the world.
The geography and the climate defines its richness and give to this country the largest welfare of Central America, which is perfectly summarised in the expression “pura vida”.The rainy season called the Green Season runs from May to November and is characterized by heavy showers that reach 400mm per month affecting differently an each of its regions. The country is lush, the tourism stops in many areas and the rain
becomes the protagonist, affecting not only the environment but especially local life and giving us an image of a more authentic Coste Rica. From ,worth to south, the project represents a collection of portraits of “Ticos” photographed to tell how the country is ethnically composed. The subjects are shown in front their homes, taken during their activities or caught in moments of intimacy in order to objectively describes their daily lives in this particular period of the year.

NEON

Thailand
A travel through the country, A vision’s chaos of color.
Nights are bright, full of life and energy: neversleep.
We find another kind of light that illuminate,it’s the sun but it’s not the real sun: the neon light, the sun of the night.
The city, the streets are in different colors, cold and flashy.
Markets are open in every corner and at every hour.
There’s no difference between day and night in this country where you can pass from muddle to silence in one second: all is punctuated by the neon lights which change with the situation and give you the mood of what you’re living.

HOLIDAY

Argentina 2013

One of the most important resource in this country is the water.
Many large rivers cross Argentina, sometimes they run dry and you will see just the bed. However, during summertime it’s a perfect place for locals, above all near Cordoba. There’s a funny way to live the river over there.
A crowd of people pours along the banks in a messy way, bringing all they need to spend a full day in the sun.
Large families bring a piece of home over there: chairs, towels, fridges, beach umbrellas, tables and lots of other things scattered everywhere while people are screaming, eating, dancing on shallow water.
It’s an authentic and immersive experience.
You would never go there if you want to relax.

SEA LIONS GOTH BLUES

Riding the wild surf in front of a rolling clip from sunset.
I’ve been always there: watching, moving from a spot to the other, traveling different countries to follow my surfers and their oceanic feeling.
This energy, feeling of limitlessness and adrenaline which give you the control of the nature. An indissoluble bond between the man and the wave as an entirely subjective fact.

Surf as an expression of a restless primal need and a sense of infinite: i want to lose myself in something larger.I need more space.

I’ve been following my men in Australia, Hossegor, Mexico, Portugal and some of the best spot in the world, breathing the challenge, the freedom and the wilderness. I’ve seen them come face to face with a perfect rolling right or the big wave of their life.

There’s more life than this.
